How many Chrome browser tabs do you have open right now? 10? 20? 90??? Yeah we see you super tab users.
If that’s you, now is the time to celebrate because Google has made it easy to organize and save your tabs. Let’s jump in.
Search and see all tabs
To quickly search and see all your tabs, click the Tab Search arrow in the left corner of the tab strip.
From this tab search menu, you can see a full list of open and recent tabs and search them. The list will also shows the tab’s current tab group. Next we’ll learn how to add those tab groups.
Group tabs
It is quick and simple to organize tabs is with tab groups.
- Right-click on a tab
- Choose Add the tab to a new group
- Label the group with a custom name and color
- Right click other tabs and choose Add tab to group or just drag them into the tab group
- Tab groups will be outlined or underlined with the chosen group color.
Once the tabs are grouped together, you can move and reorder them on the tab strip. Right click on the group name to bring up the tab group menu to change the name, delete the group, etc.
Click the group name in the tab strip to collapse the tabs within the group label and hide them for later. Just click the group name again to expand them. Now you’ve got multiple groups and your browser tab bar is more organized and usable.
Save tab groups
Saving tab groups adds them to your bookmark bar so you can hide and open that group later or even open on another computer if you are signed into your account on Chrome.
For example, I am signed into Google Chrome while working on a shared computer. I have 3 tab groups for a paper I’m researching. I can save those tab groups and sign out of Chrome on the shared computer. When I get back home, my 3 tab groups are available for me to continue my work.
- Right click on the tab group name to open the group options menu
- Toggle on the save group option
- To unsave the group, toggle off the save group option
In our example screenshot, Group 3 in red is now saved. It has a icon of circular arrows next to the group name to indicate it is saved. There is also a red Group 3 label added to the very left of the bookmarks bar. Now all tabs in Group 3 can be accessed anywhere you are signed into your Chrome account.
Choose Hide group from the tab group menu to remove the group completely from the tab strip. To unhide the group and add it back to the tab strip, just click the group label still available in the bookmarks bar.
