We caught up with Assistant Director of Human Resources Alana Etter to discuss putting the New Employee Orientation online.
Please describe the project.
New Employee Orientation (NEO)
New Employee Orientation is an important session in companies. It is a way to introduce the new hire to the College, some of its policies & procedures, traditions and culture. While NEO cannot cover everything, it is meant to provide the basics and a base for the employee to begin learning from. Our session incorporates videos, photos, and quizzes to keep the employee engaged and make learning about the College exciting.
Why did you do it?
NEO has always been conducted in person and has, over the years, become increasingly difficult to schedule people to attend due to the amount of new hires, the three different shifts, the schedules of departmental activities and the increase in work load of the HR department. I began finding myself having to reschedule people multiple times, work around my calendar of activities as well as theirs, and conducting what was once a single monthly session multiple times. Second and third shift employees were the most difficult to schedule when in a group session with others on a normal day shift. The early morning shift workers could not attend an early afternoon session.

The IDAT team introduced me to their learning platform and I was right on board. This seems like such an easy way to be able to reach out to new hires who would be able to view the session at their own pace and time. Paul was easy to work with and he made the presentation look and feel professional. He has been helpful and quick in making updates as needed.
What was the outcome?
I believe the outcome of this project was successful. Since we are able to have employees attest that they viewed the session, download the employee handbook acknowledgement form, and track the completion, we have seen quicker viewing results. This completely removed the need to have to consistently reschedule people. I hope new employees enjoy the session, learn something they didn’t know about the College, and feel ready and excited about their journey here.
