Flip Alternatives for Video Assignments & Discussion

Flip (formerly Flipgrid) has been a fantastic free instructor resource but will soon be rolled into the Microsoft Teams for Education suite of tools.

In this post we will share a few details about the access restrictions and alternatives from our own suite of Meredith tools.

Some important dates for the Flip phase out:

  • Jul 1, 2024 – app no longer available. Website in “read only” mode – you can download your videos but can’t make more
  • Sep 30, 2024 – Flip website and app completely retired

Read the full details and announcement at this Flip Help article.

Save your Flip videos and information

All videos are available before Sep 30th so please download any videos that you would like to save. You can download them individually or all at once. These videos can be uploaded to Kaltura video for storage in your media library.

You can also download group and topic summaries if needed.

Alternatives

Luckily we have alternative tools for the Meredith community that promote group interaction and video creation. Here are a few of the options:

Record using Brightspace right from the assignment.

This is good for submitting an assignment but not interactive for others to see. Learn more about this option in our post about collecting student video assignments.

Kaltura Media Gallery.

Course Media Galleries can be set up to allow students to submit videos. You will be able to reject or approve the submissions.  Students can also make timestamped comments on the submitted videos. Learn more about this option in our post about collecting student video assignments.

Kaltura videos in assignments

Students can easily record videos and submit them for assignments using Kaltura.  Learn more about this option in our post about collecting student video assignments.

Brightspace discussions

Using the “Insert Stuff” button, students can add Kaltura videos to a Brightspace discussion. This works well for containing videos and group discussion to specific topics.

We know it can be difficult to transition from a tool you have loved and used for years but IDAT Services is happy to help you implement these alternatives or develop new ideas for your course goals.
