Accessibility Testing Practice Documents

Fixing accessibility issues in documents is a skill that can be developed like any other.  Here are some practice documents for you to build your digital accessibility muscle!

This post will detail testing these documents with Panorama but you can also open them in other programs. Open the document based on file type using Microsoft Office, Libre Office, Foxit PDF Editor, etc and run their accessibility checker. Panorama also gives steps on how to fix specific issues in some of these programs.

Documents for testing

There are 2 versions of each document: 1 with accessibility problems, and 1 that is accessible. You can use both versions to see how Panorama scores them.

The syllabus PDF was created from a text editor. The scanned syllabus PDF was created by scanning a hard-printed copy that same syllabus to create a PDF. This allows you to easily see how inaccessible a scanned document is. The accessible version of both of these is the same.

Making corrections

Some issue can be corrected directly in Panorama such as adding alt text. Some issues must be handled outside of Panorama but there are directions on what needs to be fixed and how for each issue.

“Structural remediation” for PDFs fixes issues such as tagging, reading order, etc. We have a limited number of structural remediation credits available per year, which means it is only available in Panorama upon request and training.

Please contact us for training in structural remediation with Panorama. You can also use a PDF editor like Foxit PDF Editor or Adobe Acrobat to fix structural issues in a PDF.

Additional details about corrections & Acknowledgement

You can see a full list of what accessibility corrections are needed for each document at the University of Washington’s Access Computing page.
